Why Giving Yourself Grace is the Ultimate Power-Up!
Aaron “The Uplifter” here, and you know, my mission is all about helping you overcome insecurities and achieve your goals. I want to uplift you to your next level, to help you build confidence, develop a positive self-image, and embrace your unique talents and leadership potential. But here’s something crucial that often gets overlooked in the pursuit of greatness: giving yourself grace.
I’ve been there. I know firsthand what it’s like to feel unseen and uncertain, to struggle with low self-esteem and self-doubt. It’s easy to be hard on ourselves, especially when we’re trying new things, stepping into leadership roles, or navigating the exciting, sometimes overwhelming, journey of college. We all face those moments of fear, confusion, and even loneliness. You are not alone in feeling loneliness and self-doubt.
My signature message is all about challenging you to Face It. Fuel It. Fire It Up. But what does “Face It” truly mean? It means acknowledging your doubts and fears without judgment. It means recognizing that it’s okay not to know what to expect sometimes, especially in a new experience like college. And part of facing it is understanding that growth is a process, and it’s rarely perfect.
That’s where grace comes in. Giving yourself grace means allowing yourself to be human. It means:
- Accepting that challenges are part of the journey. Just like my own big transfer from a small private college to a larger business school, or driving across the country to California, new situations bring new excitement and new challenges. It’s important to carry through with actions even if you might be afraid to do something new. If you stumble, grace allows you to get back up.
- Understanding that you’re not alone. Many students feel loneliness and self-doubt, and it’s a common pitfall. When you recognize this, you can be kinder to yourself.
- Embracing the process, not just the outcome. Leadership is a process and each person GROWS into it. Small consistent steps will lead you down the path you ultimately desire and will flourish. Sometimes, we get caught up in perfectionism, but grace reminds us to celebrate those small steps, even if they’re not huge leaps.
- Practicing contrary action with self-compassion. My “Embracing the Change” keynote talks about doing the very thing you are afraid of doing. While it’s crucial to continually step outside your comfort zone and embrace your fears, grace means that if you try something new and it doesn’t go as planned, you don’t beat yourself up. You learn, you adjust, and you try again with a kinder mindset.
- Affirming your greatness, always. My A+ Framework, part of “Discovering the Leader Within You,” includes “Affirm Your Greatness”. This isn’t just about external validation; it’s about internal self-belief, even when you make mistakes. Your powerful self-image and positive thinking are built on a foundation of self-compassion.
Remember, you have the ability to make changes in yourself and others. You can overcome the fear of fear and rejection. But to do that sustainably, you need to treat yourself with the same encouragement and understanding you’d offer a friend.
So, as you kick-start your college career, discover the leader within you, or embrace the change, remember this: be kind to yourself. Give yourself the grace to learn, grow, and occasionally stumble. It’s not about avoiding mistakes; it’s about how you respond to them. With grace, you can truly ignite your purpose and lead with courage.
