Finding Your Why allows participants to examine their personal WHY for leadership and learn how this can drive their motivations to serve their campus community and beyond, even when times get tough. They will also gain an understanding of how their organization is doing, determine areas for improvement and learn how to use personal their why to help their organization more effectively live its why.

To start, participants will participate in a series of exercises to help them better understand themselves individually through discussions around their identities and lived experiences, core values and their why and motivations around leadership. A reflection of one’s leadership style rounds out their understanding of self.

Next, participants move into the application phase through the lens of their organization. Through meaningful reflection, complemented by a carefully designed assessment tool they will determine if their organization is living it’s why and how they can improve to better meet its purpose. Peer-to-peer dialogue encourages honesty around growth opportunities and encourages collaboration among groups to tackle similar challenges.

The program’s conclusion includes an intentional plan of action combining the work they have done personally and their organizational analysis. This provides a meaningful framework to deepen the program’s impact and provide direction.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of this program, students will learn:

• communicate their own “why” for being involved on campus and choosing to lead an organization,
• understand their personal values, strengths, and opportunities for growth as individuals and leaders,
• determine how to use their motivation and energy to make an impact within their organization,
• reflect on the current state of their organization and determine opportunities for improvement, and
• set tangible goals for future improvement as individuals and for their organizations
