Elephants and Onions: A Training That Goes Beyond Diversity
Each year, new students come to campuses from every walk of life, and your Student Life community must respond in a progressive and constructive way to every new student. As diversity morphs into something bigger—social justice—you might be struggling for a positive, proactive way to train those students and staff who work on the front lines with your diverse student body.
Elephants & Onions* is a 3-hour interactive workshop based on Rawls’ Mature Theory of Social Justice. It’s perfect for training orientation leaders, residence life staff, peer educators and other key individuals who need to move from tolerance to social justice advocacy by becoming agents of change. The curriculum is shaped by the campuses that bring the workshop. The social justice topics and issues that are covered will be the ones that are truly important to your campus and community. We even use clips from Glee and Cool Runnings to illustrate what it means to be an agent of change and an advocate!
This training workshop includes innovative, thought-provoking activities, so your students and/or staff spend more time talking and interacting, and less time listening. This is not a workshop that focuses on race, sexual orientation or other identities; instead the focus is on each participant and how they show up consciously and unconsciously to create a stronger, safer, more nurturing community for all people.
