Getting to know

Edward G. Young III

Edward G. Young III is a cross-cultural communication expert that also specializes in the topics of diversity, leadership, and hazing. At age 22, he suffered a broken neck from an incident involving his fraternity. Following the injury, Edward battled the depression of having his physical abilities taken away from him and he fell into a dark place. As a former Division I college athlete, Edward used the grit gained through years of training on the gridiron and baseball diamond to find his way out of that darkness. Against all odds, he made a full recovery from his injury and ultimately returned to the playing field in Japan and South Korea, which also introduced him to the world of living abroad.

In addition to athletics, over the past 15 years, Edward has lived in seven international cities and traveled to over 50 nations. His accomplishments during that period have awarded him opportunities that range from international television appearances, to being a university professor, to working with and briefing high-ranking military officials as a defense contractor in Saudi Arabia, to private consulting in Bogota, Colombia; among several other endeavors—one of which being his first TEDx Talk, Change Yourself and Change The World Through Travel.

With topics ranging from mental toughness to communication and inclusion to hazing prevention, Edward is fueled by his desire to inspire, while also encouraging his audiences to openly embrace and overcome the many challenges life brings.

SEE WHAT PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY About Edward G. Young III!

Eddie was a fantastic speaker that came to our campus to share his story, and really left his mark on the students. By him sharing his story, students were able to hear from direct experience on the negative effects of hazing and its’ long lasting effects. I would recommend Eddie for any campus looking to bring in a strong speaker who will leave a positive mark on the student population.

KEYNOTES

Beyond the Haze, Unfog Your Future

College life can be filled with a series of ups and downs. At the age of 22, Edward G. Young III broke his neck as a result of an incident involving his fraternity. He found himself battling depression from having his physical abilities taken away from him. He found his way out of that darkness and now uses his story and other real-life examples of how individuals have either succumbed to or overcome their peril. This program highlights the dangers that the practice of hazing can lead to and the importance of not giving in to peer pressure when faced with those situations. In addition, Edward inspires students to overcome physical and mental exhaustion students experience throughout the course of their college careers.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

  • Effective ways to challenge themselves to raise their standard of expectation to a higher level,
  • How to encourage others to “see beyond the haze” and weigh the consequences of what can go wrong when hazing practices go too far,
  • How to find strength when faced with difficulty in personal or campus life, and
  • Explain the difference between comfortable and exhausted while giving students techniques to tap into peak performance.
From Dream to Vision

Martin Luther King Jr. is known as one of the most prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. His “I Have a Dream” speech is considered one of the finest speeches in the history of American oratory. MLK’s dream was much bigger than that 17-minute speech. In this inspirational keynote speech, Edward G. Young III explores the renaissance movement that paved the way for the civil rights movement. Using messages left behind by Dr. King’s and other prominent civil rights leaders, Edward will illustrate the important messages of social justice and the impact they have made on today’s modern society. This keynote will inspire attendees to use the spirit of social justice to make their dream for a brighter future a clear vision that will leave a larger impact on the world

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

  • How the dream is relevant today
  • The difference between dream and vision, and
  • How to embody your vision and define its purpose.
Putting the “I” in Inclusion

When it comes to issues involving race and gender a lot of people are quick to point the finger and jump on a bandwagon but far less inclined to take a deeper look at the individual staring back from the other side of the mirror. In order to progress socially, it is important to take deep, introspective looks inside ourselves and realize that in doing nothing we are a bigger part of the problem than we are the solution.

In this program, Edward does just that. He helps students reflect on their role in creating more inclusive environments on their campus, in their organizations, and most importantly in their daily interactions.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

  • The difference between authentic and abrasive self,
  • To understand the power of empathy, and
  • The “Blurring the Lines” challenge of developing a diverse circle of friends.
Building Your Shed: From Broken to Unbreakable

Students who are scholars, that are outspoken, athletic and respectful achieve more in college and beyond. This presentation will equip students with the principles necessary to achieve academic success, develop as leaders, maintain physical fitness (regardless of whether or not they participate in formal college athletics), and maintain a level of respect for both their peers and professional staff. This program will also take a deep dive into the resilience Edward used to complete his education after the loss of his mother lead him to drop out of school and how he once again had to open the doors to his “shed” in order to resurrect himself from a broken neck injury that nearly left him paralyzed.

Learning Outcomes

As a result of attending this program, students will learn:

  • How to build their own shed of resilience,
  • How to maintain a healthy lifestyle while in college,
  • How to go from a “give-up” to “get up” mentality, and
  • How to go from broken to unbreakable.
